What if you can leave your negative history in the past?
For so many years I carried a whole load of ‘stuff’ around with me, not realising that was what I was doing.
Rucksacks and holdalls full of rocks labelled with things like ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘I’m not lovable’ or ‘I’m a victim’. These rocks came from things that had happened in the past, that I had interpreted and made up a story about. We’ve all done it.
I know every person has a different experience of childhood, but the process is the same no matter how ‘good’ or ‘bad’ our experience.
As children, we only had a tiny perspective on life, we were at the centre of our own universe, so everything that happened would have said something about who or what we were. We made up a story, and then carried that story with us into adulthood.
Over the years we added to the story, added more rocks, added more weight, to reinforce the story that we’ve carried around with us.
It was only a memory of the past
Please do not take that as disrespectful. I understand that whatever happened in our past was very real at the time. But in the present moment, it is a memory.
Those memories become our stories and affect our experience of life every day. We get so used to carrying the weight around with us, that we don’t even notice it.
We sabotage ourselves. We limit ourselves. We don’t believe in ourselves. If we’re successful we can’t quite believe our luck. We wait to be caught out.
This is just some of the ways the stories of our ‘negative history’ hold us back in the present moment. I’m sure you can list a whole load more.
Then, one day, I put the weight down. I let go of it. I let it fall back to where it belonged. I realised that what I carried with me was just a memory of the past. A ghost of what had happened.
I had carried that memory, that ghost around with me, through the power of Thought.
When I let it go, I felt the space open up in my body. I felt the space open up in my mind. I felt lighter. I felt like I could breathe more easily. I felt like I had a spring in my step. And all of a sudden, I felt like I could do anything. Endless possibility opened up.
The realisation to let go comes from within you
I wouldn’t be where I am now, running my own business, if I hadn’t let go of my story, my negative history; if I hadn’t seen that I was carrying something with me, that I didn’t need to carry.
I have been able to do this, and I know so many other people who have done the same. Some people who had far ‘worse’ childhoods than I had.
It happens through an insight. Through a realisation that comes from within you.
Allow this question to marinate or percolate through your mind and see what it conjures up for you.
What if you could leave your ‘negative history’, whatever that looks like, in the past? What would it mean for you?
